Labor Pains

August 2, 2006

Relax guys, I’m not pregnant.

Actually, I use this metaphor above to explain how I feel about Metzger and Ehrman’s book. After much difficulty (akin to the difficulty I experienced with Kurt and Barbara Aland’s book on the Text of the NT, but not quite as much), the book has finally taken a turn. The laborious and tedious descriptions of the peculiarities of a billion manuscripts (majuscule, miniscule, syriac, ethiopic, gothic, latin, Egyptian, Japanese, Lebanese – whatever, you name it, they have a manuscript for it) have finally given birth to a narrative of the history of textual criticism itself, for which I am grateful.

And of course, there has been some Textus Receptus bashing, which is always good (that sounds so horrible).
