False Expectations
September 26, 2006
Isn’t it amazing how we can fantasize about these alternate situations in our minds and expect them to be realized in our horribly crooked world? How depressing.

I’m posting off-topic. You raised a significant issue in a recent post, concerning how Jesus could have retained all of the attributes of deity at the incarnation.
It belatedly popped into my head that you’re touching on the issue of kenotic theology, which is regarded as unorthodox. It attempts to safeguard Jesus’ humanity by asserting that Jesus emptied himself of the very attributes you identified in your post, only to take them up again after the resurrection.
See Wikipedia; and Sola Scriptura. The latter source offers a good overview of the problem but, regrettably, ultimately settles for simplistic “solutions” to it.
With respect to the Gospels: I think they try to show Jesus as possessing omniscience (notably, reading people’s thoughts) and omnipotence (e.g. the raising of Lazarus). I suppose there’s even a hint of omnipresence re those occasions when Jesus heals from a distance.
Still, I think kenoticism has a lot going for it.

I disagree with that bit, Prayer Bear, but thanks for visiting.

And why wouldn’t a source called Sola Scriptura be “simplistic”?
Ohh, burn…
